THE 2015 Northern Rugby Union League champions, Barewa RFC, has been stripped of their title, following their demand of the sum of N0.6million before participating in the inaugural Super Cup billed to hold in Lagos on February 27.

The decision to stripe Barew RFC of the title was made after an emergency meeting, which was presided over by the chairman of Sub-committee on Technical issues of Nigeria Rugby Football Federation, Mustafa Allahdey, at the weekend.

According to the board, the verdict was reached in accordance with NRFF constitution governing its tournament, which says ‘any team who forfeits its place in a championship for any reasons, will automatically be replaced by the second runners up.

Allahdey who expressed displeasure over Barewa RFC disqualification, explained that the decision was made to avoid sending wrong signal to the World Rugby Federation that Nigeria is not ready to develop the sport.

“Super Cup is an NRFF event captured in its calendar. It is highly disappointing and unacceptable for Barewa RFC to hold the federation to ransom despite offered subsidy. The Super Cup is a championship organized for the Rugby league champions. If Barewa RFC do not see the Super Cup as a step forward and honor our invitation, then the club is sending a wrong signal to the entire rugby world that Nigeria is not ready to advance the sport to the next level,” he said.

The Nigeria Ruby Football Federation declared that the Super Cup would be staged annually to determine the national champions from the various regional leagues as part of its calendar in 2015 at its 2014 annual general assembly. NRFF picked Lagos State as the inaugural host for the event.

Kaduna RFC who were the runners up of the 2015 Northern League will replace Barewa RFC. They will face Cowrie RFC who are the South West champions.
