Oboh is third best at European Open Junior Golf Championship

Georgia Oboh was at her best at the just ended European Junior Open Championship in Costa Del Sol, Spain, were she braved the odds to pick the third spot in the star-studded event.

The five-day championship, which was one of the year-ending events in the European calendar, Oboh finished five over par 77, with rounds of 73, 81, 75 and 77. She lost with three shots in the last few holes in a six-plus hours round won on a count-back by 17-year-old Swiss, Natalie Armbruester, who scored 73, 75, 81 and 74. Britain’s Megan Giles scored 79, 73, 75 and 74 losing in a playoff to take the second position.

The competition, which was played on three different courses for five days, was on a format of best two-round score over four rounds followed by a cut of the best 15 players of under-18 girls.

According to Nigeria Golf Federation’s (NGF) Director of Youth Development, Emy Ekong, who witnessed the championship, Oboh would have done better but for fatigue. “I guessed she was tired after playing five rounds of competitive golf the whole week.

“Georgia was playing impressively well, leading the competition one under par after 12 holes and she was one shot behind the leader in the final day. But, she could not hold on and she finished five over par 77 for the third position,” Ekong explained.

Ekong, who spoke from Spain, giving details of the game, revealed that the tournament started with rains as the first day was inconclusive, while “the best two of the other three days were used for the cut.”

Oboh, who is an Ikoyi Golf Club, Lagos product, is expected to participate in another junior tournament in Florida, U.S. next week before going back to her academy in Manchester for a short break.
