Ofili smashes women’s 150m world record, Brume tops African ranking

United States-based sprinter, Favour Ofili, at the weekend, made history at the Adidas Atlanta City Games, smashing the women’s 150m straight world record with a blistering time of 15.85s (2.0m/s wind).

Ofili’s record came just as the world silver medallist in long jump, Nigeria’s Ese Brume moved to top of the African list with 6.70m.
Ofili becomes the first woman ever to break the 16-second barrier, surpassing the previous world best of 16.23s set by Shaunae Miller-Uibo in 2018. United States’ Tamari Davis finished second in 16.14s, while Ashanti Moore of Jamaica settled for the 3rd position in 16.50s.

Also at the weekend, reigning African long jump record holder, Ese Brume leapt a personal season’s best of 6.70m to place fourth at the Adidas Atlanta City Game at Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Georgia.

The mark is the farthest by Brume so far this season, moving from the 13th spot that she was prior to Saturday’s event after jumping 6.14m in April to number one, supplanting the duo of Egypt’s Esraa Owis and Prestina Ochonogor of Nigeria who have both jumped 6.67m this year.

Also at the weekend, Tobi Amusan ran a wind-aided 12.53 to come behind Keni Harrison of the USA (12.44) in the 100m hurdles but did not run in the final won by Harrison who ran another wind-aided time (12.30).

In the men’s 100m, Udodi Onwuzurike sped to a wind-aided 10.05 to place second behind South Africa’s Akani Simbine, who won in 9.86 into a 2.3ms tailwind.
