Okuneye is Arco Group table tennis champion
Gbolahan Okuneye at the weekend defeated Seye Oki 4-3 to emerge the new champion in the Men’s Single Division One category of the Arco Group Table Tennis Tournament held at the Ikoyi Club 1938.
This competition, the fifth in the series at the Table Tennis Section of Ikoyi Club 1938, saw the winners in all the categories going home with prized trophies, just as the runners-up won laurels.
The Men’s Double was also one of the thrillers of the night when the pair of Teju Ogunwomoju and Dapo Akindiji sent Oluwole Soetan and Seyi Adesanya packing after heated rallies that ended at three games to two.
In the Ladies Singles final, Lynn Canidlish defeated Tolu Onakoya to claim the top spot for women in the tournament.
Dr. Uche Iheme emerged winner of the Super Veteran Singles for competitors over 60 years, while Latif Bashua was celebrated for winning the Septuagenarian title for competitors that are more than 70 years old.
Speaking at the prize giving ceremony, Okuneye, who was acclaimed as the star of the grand finale of the tennis championship, said he was quite happy to win the Men’s Singles trophy that had eluded him in his previous appearances in the tournament.
Also speaking at the event, the Chairman of the Ikoyi Club Table Tennis Section, Adetayo Osuntogun, praised the Managing Director of Arco Group Plc., Mr. Alfred Okoigun, for sustaining the annual event, adding that members of the Tennis Section were overwhelmed by Arco’s gesture that has continued to promote the game in the Club.
The Captain of the Tennis Section, who coordinated the tournament, Segun Adegoke, called on other corporate bodies to emulate the commitment of Arco Group towards using table tennis as a means of exercise and recreation in a spirit of competition among followers of the game.
The Executive Director Finance and Assets Management of Arco Group, Mr. John Nejoh, who represented the company’s Group Managing Director, said the tournament has come to stay in the calendar of competitive table tennis at Ikoyi Club because Arco Group would sustain its sponsorship of the tournament annually.
