Opata charges govts to encourage schoolsports

The Director of Studies of Ferscoat International School, Pastor Felix Opata, has called on governments at all levels to support and encourage sports in schools through various competitions.

He said that this is the best way to discover and nurture young talents that would fly the country’s flag tomorrow. Speaking at the school’s inter-school sports competition held at Ipaja, Lagos, Opata said that sports bring unity, bridge gaps and foster collaboration.

Opata explained that sports is a metaphor for life, teaching values such as discipline, perseverance, teamwork, and respect qualities that shape students into better individuals. He highlighted that the event was not just about winning medals, but also about pushing personal limits, challenging oneself, and respecting the game, opponents, and the values that sports instill in every participant.

The competition itself was a testament to the talent and sportsmanship of the participants. Students from various schools, backgrounds, and religions came together to compete, celebrating the spirit of teamwork, respect, and discipline.

Ferscoat International School topped the medals’ table with five gold, three silver, and three bronze medals, Nightingale School followed closely in second place with four gold, five silver, and two bronze medals, while Roshallom Schools secured third place with four gold, one silver, and five bronze medals.

Among the highlights of the meet was the football final, which Nightingale School won by defeating Cerulean Academy 1-0 to take gold. Ferscoat triumphed in the Tug of War, claiming gold in a closely contested final against Cedar College, while Roshallom Schools dominated the sack race, securing gold in both the boys’ and girls’ categories.

Kadiri Blessing of Roshallom took gold in the Girls’ 200m, while David Iredia of Nightingale clinched the gold in the Boys’ 200m.

David Iredia of Nightingale was named Best Overall Athlete (Boys), and Sophia Balogun of Ferscoat took home the Best Overall Athlete (Girls) award. Aremu Ademola of Cerulean Academy was named the Most Valuable Player, while Richard Olabowale of Cerulean Academy and Ige Emmanuel shared the Highest Goal Scorer award with the goals each.
