IMMEDIATE past vice captain of the golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938, Tony Onwu, has been named captain. He was returned un-opposed at the Annual General Meeting concluded on Wednesday.
He takes over from media guru, Mr. Ted Iwere, whose tenure elapsed at the AGM.
“It is a great honour to be saddled with the leadership of the club and I will quickly say that I am aware how passionate members are towards the development of the section. That is what I will pursue vigorously with my team.”

“Although the two roles are not comparable, but being vice captain keeps you on the committee and tests your team building skills. It also equips you to run an effective executive team, which I believe is a great tradition,” he said.
As the captain of the club, Onwu says his immediate challenge will be to keep the course in perfect shape, upgrade aspects of the facility that have been a source of concern to the members of the section.
“The AGM left us with a good feel of the concerns of members of the section, especially on specific aspects of the course. It is clear that everyone yearns for a great course and a better managed section and we will do our best to meet those demands,” he pledged.
Immediate past captain of the section, Iwere commended passion exhibited by members of the section, describing it as very encouraging. He added that that is what informs the level of probity into details of the executive’s activity.
Iwere added that, “Onwu is an experienced manager and he brings a whole new perspective to the management of the club, which I believe will drive the golf section to a new level. He worked with my team and I can say he is a very dedicated golfer.”
