South-West Open Scrabble tourney begins tomorrow in Akure
The two-day South-West Open Scrabble Tournament will hold this weekend, in Akure, Ondo State, the organisers have said.
Speaking after a meeting with the Local Organising Committee (LOC), the South-West coordinator on the Nigeria Scrabble Federation (NSF), Emmanuel Egbele, said that the new date was necessitated by the organisers’ resolve to provide an exciting tournament experience to all participants, who registered for the tournament.
According to Egbele, holding the South-West Open Scrabble Tournament after the African Scrabble Championship, in Kigali, Rwanda, will afford newcomers the opportunity to draw direct experience from players, who participated at the biennial continental competition.
He said: “We decided to move the South-West Open Scrabble Tournament to November 2 and 3 from October 18 and 19 to give more room at creating a wholesome scrabble experience for players.
“You know, we thought it wise to also use the new dates to encourage those who are yet to complete their registration to also do so ahead of the new deadline of October 28.”
Egbele disclosed that the prestigious Imperial Boni Hotel and Resorts, located at Ijapo Estate, has been named as the arena for the third installment of the South-West Scrabble fiesta.
Players will participate in three categories namely, Masters, Intermediate and Open, while registration fees have been pegged at N25,000, N20,000 and N15,000 respectively with $500 as the top prize-money.
