Why Global Golf is not staging professional tourneys, by Sani

FRANCHISE holder of the World Golfers Championship in Nigeria, Global Golf Limited, says the lack of quality players amongst the ranks of Nigerian professional golfers remains the biggest reason it is not involved in sourcing tournaments for this calibre of players.

According to the firm, with the dearth of sponsorship biting real hard, the few firms that are willing to sponsor tournaments are doing so with serious considerations to the mileage they stand to derive from the endeavour.

Chairman of the company and past captain of Ikoyi Club 1938 (golf section), Ayinde Sani, told The Guardian in an interview that “It is so easy for us to say we can help in the development of professional golf by creating competitions for this class of players. But the point is, we are dealing with those who rely with the efficient use of their resources.

“They want to ensure that their funds are applied in such a way that they derive maximum benefits from it. And you cannot talk about having benefits by putting forward mediocre players on the field. It goes nowhere. So what we actually can do is to start with the development of the youths, by building a system where they can achieve their best to compete with the others across the world keenly.

I think if we are able to do that, eventually the results will come. But if we say, oh these gentleman are good, lets help them, it is like we are gambling and it can never help. We should have a system of training a lot of people so that the best out of them can excel themselves to a position where the can be very good at what they are doing.

Commenting on the perennial absence of Nigerian professionals in the World Ranking, he said, “It would take a miracle for that to happen because they were unfortunately born in a country which is not serious when it comes to this kind of game. They may have the innate talent, but every research has shown that you need to work hard, put yourself in a position where you can compete and have the right environment and structures in place to enable you excel. We have not created any for our young men.

“So we as a country have failed because we have only created an environment for them to fail. It is so easy for us to castigate them saying, these boys are not good, but what have we done to create that environment where they can maximize their potentials.
