Current Rugby League Champions, Cowrie RFC of Lagos’ seven years unbeaten record in the 15s series was ended at the weekend by Racing, also of Lagos, who beat them 15 points to seven in a Week Two South West CMB Rugby League encounter at the mainbowl of the National Stadium, Lagos.

The loss, a result of a woeful first half performance from the league champions, started with David Oyekanmi of Racing’s try in the ninth minute of the game.

Monday Alex could have given Racing RFC a seven-point advantage early in the game, but unfortunately missed the subsequent conversion kick.
In their quest to make an immediate comeback, Cowrie RFC started piling pressure on their opponents, but Racing’s defense line contained the attacks before Adebambo Remilekun shocked Cowrie again with another try. Alex converted the resulting kick from an unlikely position to hand his side a 12-point lead heading into half time.

After pep talk from the team’s technical crew, Cowrie came out firing from all cylinders in the second half, but Racing made their chance count with dangerman, Alex, scoring another penalty to take their lead to 15-0.

Cowrie failed to take advantage of their numerical advantage after Racing’s David Oyekanmi was sent to the sin bin for time wastage and Alex also sent off for 10 minutes for a high tackle.

Despite a late fight back from Cowrie courtesy of a try from new signing, Alfred Oche and a conversion from Azeez Ladipo, poor defending and complacency ensured that the team’s unbeaten record was shattered after seven years.

Captain of Cowrie RFC, Azeez Ladipo, said the defeat was inevitable as nothing lasts forever, blaming his teammates for poor preparation for the game.

In the second game of the day, Police RFC shot to the second spot on the CMB Building and Investment Company South West Rugby League table after a convincing win over a hapless and inexperienced Gosar RFC of Lagos.
