The House of Representatives yesterday summoned the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, Nigerian Football Federation officials, head of legal department of the Sports Ministry and other stakeholders on the lingering crisis in the sport sector.

This came as the House yesterday directed its committee on sports to interface with the relevant stakeholders in the sector and report to Chamber within two weeks for further legislative action.

The House’ resolution was sequel to a motion of urgent public importance introduced by Prestige Ossy on the need for the parliament to intervene in the lingering crisis rocking the NFF in the country.

Ossy yesterday told the parliament that the NFF was embroiled in a crisis, which, according to him, has affected the country’s performance in international competitions.

“The NFF is currently facing serious leadership tussle between two factional groups led by Mr. Amaju Pinnick and Mr. Chris Giwa, the power tussles arose from the NFF’s presidential election held on September 30, 2014 during which Mr. Pinnick was declared winner.

“Amaju Pinnick assumed office as the President of the Nigerian Football Federation and had so been until 8th day of April 2016 when a High Court sitting in Jos, Plateau State nullified his election and declared Mr. Chris Giwa as the winner of the election held on 30th September, 2014.”

He said since the declaration of Mr. Giwa as the winner and the substantial president of the NFF by the court, the infighting has escalated.

He also informed the House that it took the timely intervention of officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force to prevent a total breakdown of law and order at the headquarters of the NFF on April 12, 2016.

The lingering crisis in the NFF, he said, contributed to Nigeria’s painful elimination at the hands of the Egyptian National Team during the African Nations cup qualification.

“There is therefore, the need for the parliament to intervene and save the NFF in the county,” he said.
