Rima Strikers maintain winning streak as Omo Ogiefo, others triumph

Rima Strikers, yesterday, maintained their winning streak in the ongoing Ardoval Handball Premier League, with Correction Boys their latest victims.

The Sokoto-based team, which have won all their matches at the competition, had to delve into their reserves to overcome the gutsy Correction Boys in a game that ended 25-24.

The two teams were neck-to-neck in the highly entertaining game, but the Correction Boys had the upper hand in the first half, which ended 13-12 in their favour.

But determined to maintain their 100 per cent record in the competition holding in Benin, Edo State, Rima Strikers seized the initiative late in the game to win 25-24, cancelling out the one-point deficit at the last minute of the game.

Speaking after the game, Rima Strikers’ coach, Abdulhakim Yakubu, commended his players for keeping to the game plan, noting that victory only came in the final second of the game because his team persevered.

Yakubu said winning all seven games so far has boosted his team’s confidence going into the business end of the championship.

“We are happy that we are doing well here. We faced a lot of obstacles to get here as some officials didn’t want us to come. It took the intervention of a close ally of the governor of the state to get us here. Hopefully, we can win the league at the end of the second phase in Lagos,” he said.

In other games played in the men’s category, yesterday, COAS Shooters defeated Benue Buffaloes 37-27, while Osun United lost to Lagos Seasiders 22-26 despite leading 11-9 at halftime.

In the women’s category, Ekiti Queens, who are yet to record any win, lost to Defender Babes 43-21, while the home team, Omo Ogiefo pummeled Imo Grasshoppers 42-23.
