Athletes in the employment of Rivers State have planned a massive protest march to Governor Nyesom Wike over the non-payment of their salaries since the middle of last year.

The state government recently paid Sharks, Dolphins and Rivers Angels Football clubs’ players their eight months salary arrears, but left out the athletes, who brought glory to the state at the 2011 and 2012 National Sports Festival.

Captain of Team Rivers football team, Pedro Dauphin, said yesterday that the athletes have resolved to take their case directly to the governor, who, they said, might be unaware of their plight.

“We believe he has not been told our predicament. We thought our case was among the ones taken to him the last time, which he promptly attended to, but the contrary is the case now.

So, we have every reason to believe he has not been briefed that the athletes who brought unprecedented honour and glory to the state by winning the 2011 festival and coming second the year after at the 18th edition of the event are roaming the streets of Port Harcourt hungry and angry,” said Pedro.

The athletes, according to Pedro, are confident Wike will put smiles on their faces again and have promised to emerge the overall winner of the 19th National Sports Festival whenever and wherever it is held later
