World no1 Serena Williams will battle with Czech, Lucie Safarova for the women’s singles title today. Safarova stunned many observers as she battled through the various rounds to set up a blockbuster final with the American.

Williams did not have an easy road to the finals even though she is the top seed and has dominated women’s tennis for almost two decades. If she wins today, she will earn her 20th grand slam title as well as the third in a row.

Safarova has never been in a slam final, not to talk of winning one, but she has cruised through this tournament without dropping a single set.

It would be interesting to see how Williams holds up, because she fought through an obvious illness in her semifinal match, coming from a set and a break down to book her place in the finals. This wouldn’t be the first time however, as she lost the first set in four of six matches in this tournament before the finals today.

Stanislaus Wawrinka booked his spot in the finals by beating home-boy, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in four sets. The Swiss native came out firing on all cylinders and despite massive support from the home crowd, Warinka prevailed 6-3, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. This is his second major final in his career. He won the first major final at the Australian Open last year, defeating Rafael Nadal. He would face the winner of the other semi final between world no1, Novak Djokovic, who destroyed defending champion Nadal in straight sets, or Andy Murray.
