Sailing Club plans tourney for Nigerian Navy’s Sexagenary celebrations
The Navy Sailing Club, Ojo, Lagos, is set to honour its benefactor, the Nigerian Navy, which marks its 60th year this month, with a grand event that comprises different water sports on May 29. The events has been tagged, ‘Democracy Day Race.’
To ensure the event is fun filled and competitive for sailors, divers and swimmers, Commodore of the Navy Sailing Club, Babatunde Giwa-Daramola, said at the weekend that no stone would be left unturned in ensuring that the event is a huge success.
“The Navy will be 60 this year and the foremost and biggest indigenous yachting club in Nigeria will roll out her boats and sailors in a grand style to celebrate our benefactor. It would be a hydra-headed programme to celebrate the Democracy Day and Navy’s birthday. The club will also use the opportunity to launch her newly commissioned boats and the intra-club road,” Daramola said.
Expected to grace the occasion are top government functionaries, including the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ette Ibas, who is the chief host.
According to the organisers, the event is also an opportunity to start earlier preparation for 2020 Olympics to enable water sports produce Nigeria-based sailors to represent the country and create further awareness about water sports.
