BLUE House (St. Francis) on Tuesday relinquished the title it won last year to Red House (St. Peter), as St. Gregory College, Ikoyi, marked its 75th Inter House Sports competition.

At the end of event, St. Peters came top with 15 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze medals, followed by the defending champions, St. Francis, which recorded 13 gold, 12 silver and nine bronze medals.

With eight gold,10 silver and eight bronze medals, St. Benedict (Purple) emerged third, while St. Augustine (Green) came fourth with seven gold, nine silver and 14 bronze medals.

In the march past event, St. Francis had a consolation by winning the gold medal, St. Peter won the bronze, St. Benedict the bronze, while St. Augustine settled for the fourth position.

The occasion, which also marked the 50th anniversary of the Old Boys 1966 set, saw parents adding glamour to the fiesta by supporting their wards and also participating in the 100 metres events in the male and female categories.

Speaking with The Guardian at the end of the ceremony, the Administrator of the school, Reverend Father Emmanuel Ayeni, said learning is not only about classroom.

“Every year we have this inter-house sports because education is not just about the classroom, it is also about developing our talents. We want to showcase the talents our students have because not everyone will become a professor in the future.

“Others are going to become sports stars in various fields and that is why we are having this competition, which is to also keep bodies and souls together. I implore parents to allow their children as much as possible to showcase their talents in whatever they are good at. They should keep on encouraging them because nobody knows what the future holds.

“I know these children are going to make them proud someday. There are so many of our Nigerian players who today are overseas and everybody is proud of them and their parents inclusive. They all started from the cradle, the school, where it all began and we encourage parents to let their children be and not just condemn them to the classroom only. Our parents should be holistic in the growth of their children and in their formation. I equally implore our governments to ensure that they support grassroots sports and also provide amenities for schools in order to encourage them,” he said.

Sponsors of the occasion were the Guardian Newspapers Limited, Chikki Instant Noodle, among others.
