There seems to be no end to the lingering crisis rocking the Taraba State Football Association as factions, footballers, as well as fans yesterday took over the streets of Jalingo protesting the imposition of leaders on the state FA by the leadership of the association at the national level.

Armed with placards with various inscriptions, such as ‘we reject imposition of leaders’, the protesters vowed to resist any attempts by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to suspend football activities in the state.

The protesters, who expressed dismay at the position of the NFF representative, Ibrahim Gusau said he ought to tread the “right path “ by engaging the various factions on a round table dialogue.

The crisis, which began after the last elections into the board of the state FA, recently forced the NFF to threaten to ban the state from all football activities.

Speaking on the crisis, one of the factional chairmen, Sanusi Mahmud chided Gusau for supporting a party to the issues, adding, “the election was not conducted according to the laid down procedure… so we will never allow anybody to intimidate us.”

He urged on the NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, to call “Gusau and his loyalists to order.”

Mahmud, who claimed to be the ‘genuine Taraba FA chairman,’ said the state FA leaders have marshaled out plans to move football forward in Taraba State.”

Some of the football fans, who spoke on the crisis, queried the NFF’s refusal to resolve the issues.

Dismissing Mahmud’s claim to the FA chairmanship, Timothy H. Magaji, who told The Guardian that he was the duly elected leader of the Taraba FA, said the FA elections ‘in this state was very free and fair.’

He dismissed all the allegations by the Mahmud faction, saying they were false claims by a loser.

The Guardian observed that both factions are operating from different locations with different staff working in the name of Taraba FA.
