The golf section of Ikoyi Club 1938 came alive on Thursday, May 8, as golfers teed off for a noble cause—raising awareness and funds in the fight against cancer. The event, aptly tagged Swing Against Cancer, brought together nearly 100 golfers, including cancer survivors, in an 18-hole charity competition marked by camaraderie, competition and a call to action.
Emerging as winners on the day was Team Sacvin, captained by Anil Khosa, which secured victory with 89 stableford points. They narrowly edged out Team Birdie Boys, who came second with 86 points, while Team Shi Liva Polymer placed third after recording 83 points.
The tournament also saw individual honours go to Jerome Marinho, Pat Ozoemene, Adekoya Darius, and Seline Hainsworth, who stood out in the competitive field.
Professor Chumy Nwogu, Chairman of the organising foundation, used the platform to reiterate the importance of early detection in the battle against cancer.
“I want to thank everyone here for your support in the fight against cancer. Your donations are invaluable. Part of our mission is to create awareness and help Nigerians understand that early detection saves lives,” he said.
One of the day’s most inspiring participants was cancer survivor and prominent advocate, Farooq Oreagba. Addressing attendees, he urged Nigerians to embrace regular screenings and reject the stigma around the disease. “Having cancer is not a death sentence, especially when detected early,” he emphasised.
Corporate support for the event was strong, with sponsorship from Providus Bank, Pan Ocean/Newcross Group, Sacvin, Bridge Fertility Clinic, Vetiva Capital, MayBrands, Shi Liva Polymers, Redus Center for Digestive Health, Lakeshore Cancer Center, and Leadway Assurance.
Speaking at the event, the Team Lead for Brand Strategy at Providus Bank pledged the institution’s continued support for causes that promote health and save lives.
The Swing Against Cancer tournament once again highlighted the powerful intersection of sport, philanthropy, and advocacy, with organisers vowing to keep the momentum going in future editions.
