WORLD number one, Novak Djokovic increased his match record against Andreas Haider-Maurer to 58-5 match when he defeated the hard serving Austrian 6/4; 6/1; 6/1 in a night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The match lasted one hour and thirty-one minutes. The first set went with serve until the tenth game. Serving at 30-all, a foot fault was called against Haider-Maurer. He made the second serve and in the long rally, a net-cord shot gave Djokovic the break point, which he converted with a topspin lob over the lanky (6 feet and 2 inches) net-charging Andreas.

Djokovic took the first game of the second set without losing a point, hitting an ace and a service winner. On the other hand, Haider-Maurer struggled through double faults, another foot fault call and eventually Djokovic took the game with an overhead smash.

Although Djokovic double-faulted in the first point of the third game, he took a few seconds to rob dust on his racket grip because of the moisture in the humid stadium. Haider-Maurer struggled to hold serve, delivering an ace (128mph) at break point, before clinching the 4th game. Djokovic took his serve to go up 4-1 but Haider-Maurer did not take a point on his serve and double-faulted at game point. Leading 5-1, Djokovic was down 0-15, but delivered an ace to level and won the next three points to take the second set by 6 games to one.

The third set was a rapid downhill slide for the Austrian. He served first and lost the game at love. Djokovic won the second game without conceding a point. Haider-Maurer put up a gallant effort in the third, despite being down 0-40 as he delivered an ace to deuce before clinching the game.

It was the Austrian’s last hurray as the remaining games went to Djokovic in quick succession. The set ended at 6-1, and Djokovic was through to the third round.

It was a battle for survival for the world number one, Serena Williams in her match against Kiki Berthens of Nederland (Holland).
