Uche: ‘Poor management, neglect made pro wrestling extinct’

President of the Nigeria Professional Wrestling Federation (NPWF), Chief John Uche

All roads will lead to Awka, Anambra State, in September when professional wrestlers from across the country gather to celebrate the 44th anniversary of the sport in the country, the president of the Nigeria Professional Wrestling Federation (NPWF), John Uche, has said.

Speaking yesterday in Akwa, Uche said that every arrangement has been made to make the 44th anniversary a huge success. Activities marking the anniversary will run from September 26 to 28.

“We want to inform you of our preparation to shake Anambra State with scintillating wrestling display, which we believe will attract a large crowd and personalities from across the country,” Uche said.

“The 44th anniversary celebration being organised by Nigeria Professional Wrestling Federation (NPWF) is to announce the revival and arrival of a professional wrestling championship again in Nigeria.”

Uche described professional wrestling as the first sport to be well accepted and enjoyed by Nigerians before it suffered extinction due to bad management and government neglect.

“Now we are back again to shake the world come September 26, 27 and 28, 2025 at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka,” he boasted.

According to Uche, the Nigeria Professional Wrestling Federation chose Anambra State for the 44th anniversary to commemorate and immortalise the world’s first heavyweight wrestling champion in Africa, Late Chief Mike Okpala, also known as the Power Mike of Africa, who hails from Neni in Anaocha Council of the state.
