Warri Wolves ‘without coaches’ face acid test in Kano

Warri Wolves Football Club may file out against host, Berau FC of Kano, in this weekend’s Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) without the support of its technical crew.

This may not be unconnected with the directives by the NPFL, which cautioned the Seasiders on Tuesday on failure to adhere to procedures for contracting coaches following the suspension of coach Napoleon Aluma by Delta Sports Commission.

Aluma was suspended on Monday, a day after Warri Wolves suffered 1-2 home defeat to visiting Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan at Oleh.In a letter titled, “Notarisation and Registration of Contracts” addressed to the club and signed by the NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Davidson Owumi, the club was mandated to ensure full compliance by submitting its contract with all of the club’s technical and management officials, citing its Frameworks and Rules for 2025/26 in demanding compliance by Warri Wolves.

The letter warned that Warri Wolves may have to play its future matches without a bench on account of failure to comply with the directive.

“Note that failure to comply with this instruction will lead to the restriction of your technical team from accessing the technical area in future NPFL matches,” Owumi warned.

The Guardian learnt, that Warri Wolves FC departed for Kano on Thursday without members of its technical crew so as to avoid falling into NPFL trap.A club official hinted that Warri Wolves FC is already working round the clock to meet the ‘procedures for contracting coaches’ condition given by NPFL.

It was not clear on Friday if Delta Sports Commission will recall the suspended Coach Napoleon Aluma or go ahead to replace him. Though, Warri Wolves will face Berau FC without the support of its technical crew, the players are in high spirit following the donation of two brand new buses by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to the team on Tuesday evening.

“The team traveled to Kano in the two brand new buses donated by the Governor, and I am sure it will boost the players’ morale against Berau FC of Kano,” the official said.

Before Warri Wolves departed for Kano, Interim Coach, Austin Johnny, opened up about the club’s struggles over the past month, describing September as a period marked by “challenges and tough hurdles.”

The Seasiders endured a difficult run form, recording three losses and one draw, a performance the Coach admitted was worrisome for both the team and its supporters.

“We know that our fans and supporters worldwide are not really pleased with our September outing. Many are already losing their loyalty to the Seasiders. We are confident to tell you not to lose hope in us. It was just a trying moment for us, and we will definitely get over that phase,” he said.

According to him, the technical crew and players have taken constructive steps to turn things around.

“We have re-strategised and regrouped and promise to bounce back stronger,” Coach Johnny stated.
