Wesley Junior Girls School, Yaba and Herbert Macaulay Secondary School Girls dominated the maiden edition of the Under-17 Judo Slam Championship held at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Hall, Rowe Park, Yaba, for schools under educational district four in Lagos on Wednesday.

In the 36kg category, Ajisegiri Aisha of Wesley Junior Girls School, Yaba emerged champion, as Adeyemo Adeola of Onike Junior Secondary School, Iwaya, Lagos, came second and the third position went to Adedoyin Taiwo of Wesley Junior Girls, Yaba.

The 44kg category was won by Yan Yan Gbemi Sarah from Kadara Junior School, Ebute-Meta, the first runners up went to Obadun Azeezat of Ultimate Private School, Oyingbo, while the joint third place position went to Ogan Nelly of Herbert Macaulay School, Yaba and Zubair. Hard fighting Herbert Macaulay School continued their good run when Oriyomi Happiness won the 48kg. Huyusugan Deborah of St. Francis Secondary School, Onike took the second position, while joint third position was won by Joweigha Faith, Zumratul Islamiyah Grammar School, Yaba and Ogundaini Estheb of Wesley Junior Girls School, Yaba.

Chidinma Ezike of Wesley Junior Girls School, Yaba showed class in the 57kg by winning the gold medals, Adaramola Christiana of King James College, Iwaya, won silver while Sunday Topotoke of Wesley Junior Girls School, Yaba and Ilori Esther, St. Francis Secondary School, Onike carted home bronze medals.

Other categories competed for include 52kg won by Ajisegiri Fausat of Wesley Junior Girls School, Yaba, the 63kg, which was won by Omotehinse Seyi also of Wesley Junior Girls School, Yaba and the 70kg was won Ibiyeye Bukola of Wesley Junior Girls School, Yaba.

An elated Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Adewunmi Ogunsanya, who expressed satisfaction with the number of talents on display at the championship, said: “I am so delighted with what I saw today. This is an evidence of abundant talents in Lagos State; the students have actually shown tremendous skills and also a full grasp of the basics of the game of Judo and we can see a great future in them,” he stated.
