Rachael Akinyemi has been managing the Lagos Cheshire Home for the last six months, but her involvement with the disabled and old peoples home dates back to 1980, when she was converted by one of the Cheshire Home mate who had invited her to church during a visit to the home nearly three decades ago.

Today, she looks back and is appreciative to God for choosing this path for her – tendering to the disabled and the aged. “You can’t be with these special people and not be a better Christian,” she says. “My work with them has made me more closer to God and appreciate his mercies for being who I am today. They need care and love but some people cannot even move close to them. God has given us the grace to be at their service even when it is no convenient.”

While pouring encomiums on the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, and his wife, Abimbola, for showering the home with their love, care and concern; Akinyemi wants Nigerians to emulate the first family in the state and extend loving care to the disabled, especially during this Yuletide, when they have nobody else in the world to celebrate with.

At the home yesterday, the Rotary Club of Surulere North East, led members to spend some good time, bringing along food and gift items for the housemates. In a chat with The Guardian, president of the club, Rotn. Bashir Olatunde Bada said the club has been celebrating festive period with the home since 2004.

“We have always been coming here to have fun with everybody here. It is our adopted home, that is why we did not just come here to drop food items, we are actually eating and drinking with them to make them feel they are part of the society. Our wishes for them are to be happy and have a Merry Christmas too.”
