Discover the will of God for you (12)

Emeritus Prof. Mercy Olumide
Keeping God’s moral standards is significant and could distinguish believers from unbelievers. Jesus said that those who do the will of God will enter the kingdom of heaven, while those who do not won’t (Matthew 7:21; 21:31). Using different terms, Jesus also said that those who obey God’s will are part of His spiritual family (Matthew 12:50).

Now, of course, we know that following God’s moral will, His commandments in the Bible, will not make us righteous, and can only be possible through His Holy Spirit. But the moral will of God is the expression of the character of God. And we are called to be His image-bearers. “For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending His son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.” (Romans 8:3-4)

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself. But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.’” (Galatians 5:13-15)

God has done everything to make His will known to His people. He gave the Israelites the law, His covenant and when they broke it, He sent His prophets. In the end, He sent His only son. All of a sudden, it feels a bit silly to say that we can’t find God’s will for our lives.
God’s Individual Will?

• As regards Jeremiah (Read Jeremiah 1:4-19. The call of Jeremiah)
“5: Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations. 6: Then said I, ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.7: But the Lord said to me, “do not say, ‘I am a youth,’ for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and whatever I command you, you shall speak. 8: Do not be afraid of their faces, for I am with you to deliver you,” says the Lord. 9: Then the Lord put forth His hand and touched my mouth, and the Lord said to me: ‘Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.”’ (Jer. 1:4-9)
Jeremiah 1:5 says that God knew you, as he knew Jeremiah, long before you were born or even conceived. He thought about you and planned for you.
