For residents of Ukpabi- Nimbo community, Uzouwani Council Area, Enugu State, which last April suffered herdsmen attack, nothing could be more heartwarming, than the promise to commence water projects in the community to ease their suffering.

Members of the community had leapt in joyous celebration as soon as a delegation of Enugu indigenes in Japan, which had called to empathise with them, announced their intention to provide water for them.

The delegation also came with food items, enough to be distributed among the families

Recall that about 20 young men were killed with many others, sustaining injuries during an early morning attack by herdsmen on April 25, 2016.  Property and farmlands worth several millions of naira were also destroyed. The attack rendered many homeless, even as some of those who fled the community are yet to return.

Chairman of Enugu Indigenes in Japan, Eze Brown Okechukwu, who led the delegation, said they were touched by the plight of the people.

Represented by the Vice Chairman, Ubasinachi Okafor, he stated that it was more painful that those who were killed during the attack were indigent persons living in the community.

“We cried when we received the sad news. We had also prayed that such would not repeat itself in this community. What we want to hear as news is the level of progress our children have made, not death, not destruction of farmlands, not inter-ethnic conflicts.

“We know there is no amount of pity that can quantify your loss, but we urge you to take solace in the fact that your loved ones that died did not die in vain. Please, we pray you continue to maintain the peace and allow government to sought out the matter,” he said.

Leading the delegation, which included the founding chairman Ogbonna Onyeisi, Obiora Nwanze, Felix Ochu, traditional rulers among others visited some of the affected areas, the chairman said that ensuring availability of water in the community would be a major project for the association in the next few months.
