Two communities in Abia State-Amuzukwu in Umuahia North Local Government and Umuezeukwu Nsulu in Isiala North council area, ravaged by gully erosion, have been compensated by the World Bank, through the state chapter of the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Projects (NEWMAP)

While Amuzukwu received N34m, for properties lost to the disaster, Umuezeukwu Nsulu got the sum of N238, 197, 808. 80m, for the rehabilitation of its 1.2-kilometer road.

Aside the two communities, works has commenced on the designing of the Amuda Isuochi in Umunneochi local government gully erosion sites, while the Elu Ohafia, Dodds Methodist Church and Umuagu Ibeku roads have also been completed.

Acting Director of NEWMAP Engr. Izuchukwu Onwuhara, who announced the development at a Town hall sensitisation programme organised by NEWMAP, held at Umuezekwu Nsulu, said the projects were facilitated, following Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s payment of the state’s NEWMAP counterpart Fund.

Representative of the NEWMAP Communication Consultant, Mr Sola Akinsiku stressed the need for all to protect the environment around them, saying any harm done to the environment returns its negative impact on the immediate and even remote communities.

“Let us be members of the universal vanguard that protects the environment. It is what we make of our environment that we get in return. The problems of today’s environment are those connected with how our forefathers, governments and others did or didn’t do well on gully erosion, flood control and others.”

Akinsiku urged them to see the project as their own, saying that the project was meant to save lives and properties of the people.

That is why experts are contracted to train communities on how to protect the environment, which if neglected, the people will suffer the consequences.”
