“One thing have I desired.” As in Ps 26, the psalmist seeks the presence of God; it is the one thing most treasured in his life, and he prays for it with singleness of purpose. God Himself calls all of us to this same purpose: “Seek ye my face (v.8). Those who do so, striving to dwell in God’s holy presence, are given the firm assurance that no matter what trials come to them, the Lord will never forsake them (vv. 9-10). They have no reason for despair; God’s goodness is reserved them (vv.13-14).
(4.2) Silent adoration leads to effortless change
“For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.” (Rom 8:29)
God’s ultimate goal for us is to make us like Christ (1John 3:2). As we become more and more like him, we discover our true selves, the persons we were created to be. How can we be conformed to Christ’s likeness? By reading and heeding the Word, by studying his life on earth through the Gospels, by being filled with his Spirit, and by doing his work in the world. It makes you conscious of the truth that God lives inside you, hence you consciously endeavor to live from ‘inside out.’ Hence you do not struggle to live by works but by His Spirit to please Him.
“Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Col 1:27)
Christ’s living in us is our assurance of future glory and eternal life. Only His indwelling and our continual intimate communion with Him ca n dispel any doubt about obtaining heaven. To have Him is to have life (cf.Rom 8:11; Eph 1:13-14; 1Jn 5:11-12).
As you live for God, be determined not to trust in your own strength or abilities. Instead, depend on God and work in the power of His Spirit.
“…for without Me you can do nothing” (Jn 15:5)
Without God’s Spirit we can do nothing of lasting value
“Yet I will have mercy on the house of Judah, will save them by the Lord their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword or battle, by horses or horsemen.” (Hos 1:7)
God said he would personally rescue the people of Judah from their enemies with no help from their armies or weapons. Although God asks us to do our part, we should remember that he is not limited to human effort. God often chooses to work through people, but only because it is good for them. He can accomplish all his purposes without any help from us if he so chooses. You are very important to God, but on your own you have neither the ability to fulfill nor the power to disrupt God’s plans.
