Adoration – Part 12

Keeping Still Is A Prerequisite For Hearing God’s Voice(Cont)

“The Lord passed by,” (19:11-12). To encourage and strengthen Elijah’s faith, God visited him on Mount Horeb (that is, Mount Sinai, the Mountain of Revelation). This visitation was accompanied by a great wind, earthquake and fire, but the Lord was in none of those events. Instead, the revelation of God came in the form of “a still small voice.”

Elijah learned that God’s work proceeds and advances,“not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit”, says the Lord of hosts,” (Zech 4:6). God had, in fact, not deserted His prophet (nor does He ever desert His faithful people). In the end, God did work out His righteous plan of redemption in spite of the overwhelming presence of evil in Israel.

19:11-13, Elijah knew that the still small voice belonged to God. He realised that God does not reveal himself only in powerful, miraculous ways. To look for God only in something big (rallies, churches, conferences, highly visible leaders) may be to miss him because he is often found gently whispering in the quietness of a humbled heart. Are you listening for God? Step back from the noise and activity of your busy life, and humbly and quietly listen for his guidance. It may come when you least expected it. Listening and responding are vital in a relationship with God. Although God does not always use the sound of a human voice, he always speaks clearly through his word. To receive his messages, we must be ready to listen and to act upon what he tells us.

Like Samuel, be ready to say: “Here I am,” when God calls you to action. (See,1Sam 3:1-5).

God knows each of us by name. We are important to God, and he also summons us by name and gives us his name.

“But now, thus says the Lord, who created you… “Fear not, for I have redeemed you;I have called you by your name;you are Mine,” (Is 43:1).

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me,” (Jn. 10:27).

“My sheep hear my voice.” Those who are true sheep of Christ obey His voice and follow Him; they are in constant fellowship with the Shepherd. “Hear” and “follow” are in the present tense, denoting repeated or habitual activity. To those who are following, the Shepherd gives eternal life. Those sheep who stray from the Shepherd and refuse to listen prove that they are not His sheep (15:1-6).

“Lord, my heart is not haughty, nor my eyes lofty.Neither do I concern myself with great matters, nor with things too profound for me,” (Ps 131:1).
