Marriage partners must expect exclusive love and loyalty, demanding that each remain completely faithful and true in the marriage relationship.
“I am the Lord, that is My name;and My glory I will not give to another, nor My praise to carved images,” (Is 42:8).
(4.8) Prayer Of Thankfulness (Phil 1:9-11)
“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment,” (Phil 1:9-11).
1:9 “Love may abound … in knowledge.” Love, if it is to be Christian, must be based on Biblicalrevelation and knowledge.
1. In the NT “knowledge” (Gkepignösis) is not merely head knowledge, but a spiritual knowing in the heart. Itrefers to God’s revelation as experientially knownand involves a personal relationship with Godrather than intellectually knowing facts aboutGod (v.10-11; Eph 3:16-19).
2. Thus, to know the Word of God (cf. Rom 7:1) or to know the will of God (Acts 22:14; Rom 2:18)implies a knowledge that expresses itself in fellowship, obedience, life and nearness to God(John 17:3; 1John 4:8). Knowing theologicaltruth (1Tim 6:3; Tit 1:9; see Gal 1:9) has a set goal. love for God and freedom from sin (Rom66). “In all judgment” means that the believer, through love and knowledge, discerns what isgood and evil.
1:9 Often the best way to influence someone is to pray for him or her. Paul’s prayer for the Philippians was that they would be unified in love. Their love was to result in greater knowledge of Christ and deeper insight (moral discernment). Their love was not based on feelings, but on what Christ had done for them. As you grow in Christ’s love, your heart and mind must grow together. Is your love and insight growing?
“And He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again,” (2Cor 5:15).
5:13-15: Everything that Paul and his companions did was to honour God. Christ’s love controlled their lives. Because Christ died for us, we also are dead to our old lives. Like Paul, we should no longer live to please ourselves; we should spend our lives pleasing Christ, who died for us and rose from the grave.
(4.9) We must hate what God hates
Things God Hates
1.Iniquity, lawlessness, Evil
“You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;therefore God, Your God, has anointed Youwith the oil of gladness more than Your companions.” (Heb 1:9) NKJV
“Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows,” (Heb 1:9) KJV.
It is not enough for the children of God to love righteousness; they must also hate evil.
