Adoration – Part 3

Emeritus Prof. Mercy Olumide

Gazing on God in adoring contemplation infuses into our hearts a holy fear of the Lord. Jesus did not work independent of God the Father, but in union with Him. This should give us even more assurance of being welcomed into God’s presence and being protected by Him. Jesus’ purpose was to do the will of God, not to satisfy Jesus’ human desires. Jesus always do those things that please the Father. When we follow Jesus, we should have the same purpose. If we want to please God, we must not work independent of God, but in union with Him. The only way to work in union with God is to allow the Holy Spirit—the Spirit of Christ—who lives inside us to control our lives, so that, we can have the mind of Christ.

To have the mind of Christ means knowing His will and His redemptive plan and purpose. It means appraising and seeing things the way God sees them, valuing things the way He values them, loving what He loves and hating what He hates. It means understanding the holiness of God and the awfulness of sin. Thus, receiving the Spirit and following the Spirit cause the believer’s values and worldview to become radically different from the ways and wisdom of this age. He or she who practices adoration of God becomes like a mirror in which the likeness of Jesus is seen more and more clearly.

(3) Method and Process for Adoring Contemplation
Everyday ensure that you spend at least 15-20 minutes in Adoration of God. While “gazing” at God, rejoice at the privilege of knowing God Who has revealed Himself to us and has adopted us as His children even while we were still sinners. Can you imagine the worthlessness of trying to relate with an “unknown God?” Take time each day to be still and to exalt God. Adoration is not to glance at God, but to gaze on God. “Gaze” means to look steadily at somebody (or something) for a long time, either because you are very interested or surprised or because you are thinking of something. Adoration of God is not gazing aimlessly into space nor with hearts and thoughts far from God.

Adoration is gazing fixedly full in the face of Jesus in adoration and admiration of His nature and character. Adoration is not gazing at your problems, but gazing at our God—Jesus— Who is real, alive and powerful. God is a Spirit. If you realise the awesome truth that the Holy Spirit is, indeed, the Spirit of Jesus Christ, Who is God Who died through the sacrifice He made for us on the cross, and Who is alive and breathing inside you, you cannot resist adoring God for the revelational knowledge of God.
