As call for greater integration of youth into leadership positions continues to gather momentum, the Acting Supreme Knight of the Order of St. Mulumba Nigeria, Bro. Diamond Ovueraye has advised Nigerians to prepare their children for management right from childhood.

Ovueraye made the call at a press briefing during the Order’s 38th yearly Convention held recently in Lagos.

Speaking on the theme: “Family Values, Human rights and the challenges of modernisation in Nigeria,” the Supreme Knight called on Nigerians to teach their children leadership qualities from home, noting that with such knowledge, they would naturally seek to lead.

He said the older generations are in positions of authority today because the younger ones are yet to demonstrate readiness to lead.

“We need to get young people into government, but it is how you train them, challenge them, that would bring out the desire and willingness to lead in them,” he said.

He identified several challenges facing the family today, which include globalisation, human rights abuse, and same sex marriage.

“We believe our family values have been eroded and our human rights have been bastardised under the ambience of modernisation in Nigeria,” he said.

According to him, the fundamental human rights entrenched in the Nigerian Constitution have been flagrantly abused with impunity in the society.

Ovueraye said: “Whether they are government policies, restricting movement, free speech, criticism, or association, individuals are intimidated and at times arrested for infringement.”

He noted that what is trending now is single parenting, same sex marriage, nudity, vulgarity, false lifestyles and terrorism.

“We believe parents should provide effective monitoring and strict parental guidance in the growth, development and success of their children, drawing from values they were exposed to in their own childhood days,” he counseled.
