Foundations for New Testament believers

Timi David

“According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Cor 3:10-12) “Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.” (Eph 2:19-21)

Jesus didn’t lay the foundation for the New Testament doctrines, the Apostles did! But, they laid that foundation on the revelation of the finished works of Christ. The Church wasn’t born until after the death, burial, resurrection of Christ and the Coming of the Holy Ghost. So, the Church age began after the resurrection of Christ. Jesus did not have the opportunity to teach the born-again believers, he left this responsibility to His Apostles (Eph 3:1-11).

Paul was given the special assignment to unfold the mystery of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ to the church. This plan is to let the Gentiles know that they will be partakers of the divine nature of God and partakers of His inheritance when they accept the good news of what Christ has done for them putting their trust in Him that do the work on their behalf.

Which Foundation Did Paul Lay?
“For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. If anyone’s work, which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.” (Cor 3:11-15) NKJV

The foundation Paul laid is Christ. He brought the revelation of the finished works of Christ to the Church. He explained through revelation what Christ has accomplished for the church bringing the message of the unmerited grace to the world. The New Testament doctrine is built upon this foundation. The revelation of the finished works of Christ is what the church should be built on.

Jesus said, Matt 16:18 “… I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.”

Today, many pastors and founders are building their own church, not the church of Christ. The Church of Jesus is built on the revelation of Jesus and not human philosophies and doctrines. If the church you attend is not built on the finished works of Christ, it’s your pastor’s church not the church of Christ no matter how large it is.

No other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid through the teachings of the Apostles. If you want to know the foundational doctrines of the New Testament read the Epistles. If your church practices and teachings are not in line with these teachings, you are not using the right materials to build. The truth is many are not even building on the foundation already laid in Christ.

“Oh, foolish Galatians! Who has cast an evil spell on you? For the meaning of Jesus Christ’s death was made as clear to you as if you had seen a picture of his death on the cross. Let me ask you this one question: Did you receive the Holy Spirit by obeying the Law of Moses? Of course, not! You received the Spirit because you believed the message you heard about Christ. How foolish can you be? After starting your Christian lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort? Have you experienced so much for nothing? Surely, it was not in vain, was it?” (Gal 3:1-4) NLT

This looks like most of the popular churches in Nigeria today; they start their Christian life in the Spirit but now trying to become perfect with their own effort. Our G. O’s, Bishops and pastors have taught us to strive and work out our righteousness instead of learning to trust in the power of the Holy Spirit to work through us. We have become sensual instead of Spiritual. We have become religious instead of allowing Christ to live through us.

We are trying to love God with all our might and strength instead of learning how deeply He loves us first. We are striving to look holy before the world, presenting our good deeds to the Lord so we can be acceptable to Him, instead of accepting Christ righteousness and justification. Our doctrines today are sharply directly opposite that of the Apostles. Wake up Church! The night is far spent; embrace the true gospel. Only those who Build on the foundation of the finished works of Christ shall be rewarded. Break free from religion and stand for the truth of the gospel!
