The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has donated medical equipment worth millions of naira to the Cancer Centre of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta, Lagos, in a move to strengthen cancer diagnosis, treatment and patient in the country.

The donation, facilitated by the Africa, West Area, Presidency of the Church, Elder Adeyinka Ojediran, was formally handed over at a ceremony held in the hospital premises.

Speaking at the event, Elder Ojediran said the intervention was driven by the church’s commitment at alleviating human suffering, preserving life and strengthening communities through humanitarian service.

According to him, healthcare support remains one of the church’s major humanitarian priorities because it reflects the teachings and example of Jesus Christ, whose ministry focused on healing and caring of the vulnerable.

He explained that the equipment was made possible through the faithful contributions of church members across the world, including Nigeria, adding that the donations were inspired by the desire to serve humanity rather than seek recognition.

The equipment are LEEP machine, ultrasound machine, thermal ablation equipment, defibrillator and crash cart, biomedical safety cabinet, medical refrigerator, colposcopes, chemotherapy chairs, hospital beds, infusion pumps, drip stands and vital signs monitors.

Ojediran noted that the equipment would enhance early cancer detection, improve treatment outcomes and strengthen healthcare delivery, particularly in the management of cervical cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

He said: “These are not merely items; they are instruments of healing, tools of hope and vessels of life-saving care.”

He urged stakeholders to ensure proper utilisation and maintenance of the equipment to guarantee long-term benefits for patients and the healthcare system.

Responding, FMC Medical Director, Dr Shared Adebowale Ogunme, described the donation as historic and transformative for the Cancer Centre, adding that the church donated 17 categories of equipment comprising 93 items that would significantly improve preventive cancer services, chemotherapy administration, in-patient care and workplace safety for healthcare personnel.

“With the donation of this equipment, the church has given renewed hope to countless patients and their families who will benefit now and in the years ahead,” Ogunme said.

As a mark of appreciation, Ogunme conferred on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints the title of “Friend of the Cancer Centre,” making it the first organisation to receive the recognition from the facility.

He also expressed optimism about a long-term partnership between the church and the hospital in advancing quality cancer care and improving health outcomes for Nigerians.
