Introduction: All music is spiritual. It either summons forces of darkness, inflame passions, inspire lust, violence and destruction or invite the Holy Spirit, deliver, heal and bring about signs and wonders. It all depends on the content, the intention of the artistes and singers, and its source. The Bible shows us several ways we can invite the Holy Spirit and experience signs and wonders through music. In 2 Chro. 5:12-14 “…being arrayed…having cymbals…psalteries…harp…with trumpets, trumpeters …singers…and instruments of music… the glory of the Lord filled the house of the Lord”
Singing and Dancing
Singing and dancing before the Holy One of Israel produces joy and strength, Nehemiah 8:10. Real joy of the Lord cannot be suppressed. Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, Ps.35: 28; Ps.30: 11-12; Mt.12: 34. Singing and dancing is a celebration of the awesomeness, kindness, mercy, grace and power of the Lord, Lk.2: 20, Mt.21: 9,15; Hos.2: 15; Lk.1: 59-64; Ps.67: 4; Ps.149: 3. Ultimately, it is an exuberant expression of gratitude.
Clapping and Music
Clapping of hands and the use of ten string instruments are other biblical ways a Christian can express his or her appreciation to God, Ps.47: 1. When it is done properly, decently and in order, it is pleasing to God. Instruments of music vary from tumbrels and violins, organs and pianos, and drums, Ps.150.
The Holy Spirit
The Christian joy of the Lord is like a spring or fountain that keeps on bubbling from the very depths of our being, Eph.5: 14-19. This is expressed as a melody in the heart. It employs our tongues and vocal chords in the most important and highest purpose and function possible and ensures sanctification of our bodies and souls, shutting every door against base elements of defilement, 1 Cor.14: 15.
Conclusion
Today’s teaching should be put to practise now and always, James 1:22. Sing to the Lord, dance before the Lord your Maker with clapping of your hands and musical instruments as well, for He is good and His mercy endures forever. It is pleasing to the Lord and highly rewarding too. There are several testimonies of praise and worship producing answers to long-standing prayer requests, hence, the saying that when prayer don’t seem to be working, switch to praise. His praises will never depart from your mouth in the mighty name of Jesus.
