The benefits of adoration

Emeritus Prof. Mercy Olumide

(4.1)  Adoration makes us yearn for God’s presence

Read Psalm 63. The thirsty soul

“O God, You are my God; early will I seek You; My soul thirsts for You; my flesh longs for You In a dry and thirsty land where there is no water,” (Ps 63:1).

“Early will I seek you.” Every believer should pray as David did in this Psalm.

 1. It describes a man’s deep longing in his heart for God, one that can only be satisfied by an intimate relationship with Him (see Ps 42).

 2. Those who profess to know God need to examine themselves by asking the following: Do I really possess a strong desire for God and His presence in my life? Or do I go through life largely consumed with secular pursuits and worldly entertainment, while prayer and fasting, fervent love for Jesus, study of God’s word, and a deep desire for God and His kingdom have little place or vitality in my affections and time (see Mat 5:6;6:33).

 Ps 42: Yearning For God

“So I have looked for You in the sanctuary, to see Your power and Your glory,” (Ps 63:2).

“To see Your power and Your glory… in the sanctuary.” Not only should we earnestly seek God’s presence in our personal lives, but we should also long for His spirit, power and glory to be manifested in His house. We should pray for God to assert Himself in power against satanic dominion, demonic oppression (Mat 12:28; Mk 1:34,39), sin (Rom 6), and sickness and infirmities (Mat 4:23; 9:35; Acts 4:30;8:7). We should fervently desire that the gospel might convict and save sinners (John 16:8-11; Acts 4:33), sanctify them (John 17:17) and bring them into the Spirit’s fullness (Acts 1:8;2:4).

“When I remember You on my bed, I mediate on You in the night watches,” (Ps 63:6).

“I remember You … and meditate on You.” Along with prayer and reading God’s word, we should strive to centre our thoughts on God day and night. Remembering God must not be an occasional occurrence, but a repeated experience of looking unto heaven in praise, acknowledging His presence and lordship, and communing with Him. Nothing would be better than that our first thought in the morning and our last thought at night be on His grace, character, love and plan for us.

And when we find it impossible to sleep during the night, we can again turn our minds and hearts to God.

Ps 27: David’s Song Of Confidence

“One thing I have desired of the Lord, That will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple,” (Ps 27:4).
