As It Was With Natural Israel
This story concerns one of the many acts of provocation-that-the children of Israel did against God and the severity of God’s judgment upon them. They rebelled and murmured against God and Moses. The Lord was provoked and sent fiery serpents among the people and as many of them as were bitten by these fiery serpents died. Having seen the consequences of their sin, the people cried unto Moses, who interceded on their behalf to God, who gave them “THE SOLUTION” to their problem. “And the Lord said unto Moses, MAKE THEE A FIERY SERPENT and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. And MOSES MADE A SERPENT OF BRASS, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived” (Numbers 21:8-9).

Let us note here, that the brazen serpent was of God. It was God’s solution to the problem of Israel. God was in the brazen serpent delivering His people from the judgment and consequences of sin. It was specified by God. It was a wonderful thing and glorious as well. The power of God was manifested in the brazen serpent. It was an instrument in God’s hand. In the brazen serpent God wanted to draw the people’s attention to the PERSON, MINISTRY, SACRIFICE and THE LIFE CHANGING POWER of Jesus! It was a type of Christ.

It was pointing to Christ. Without Christ in the brazen serpent, it was dead and useless. The Lord Jesus confirmed this much in John 3:14-15. “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so, must the Son of man be lifted up that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life”.

In this scripture, Jesus pointed out that He was the ANTITYPE of this brazen serpent. He said the brazen serpent typed out His sacrificial and life-healing ministries. The brazen serpent was God’s solution to people of the day, Yet, Hezekiah did that which was right in the sight of the Lord when he broke this same brazen serpent. Why? How could something that was so good and glorious become such an abomination in God’s sight that God was pleased with the man who destroyed it? The answer can be found in the last part of verse 4 of II Kings 18. “…or unto these days the children of Israel did burn incense to it and he called it Nehushtan.”
