We cannot fully enjoy worship without the Holy Spirit’s involvement. Paul captures this fact in Philippians 3:3, “For we are the circumcision who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.”

Worship of all kinds is only possible through the Holy Spirit. He leads us into the presence of God and makes the worship of God more intimate and meaningful. The Holy Spirit shows us the way into God’s presence and enables us to fellowship with Him. He inspires our spirit and brings us into communion with the Spirit of God (Romans 8:14-16).

The Holy Spirit creates the longing in us to worship God. It is He who inspires our hearts to worship and praise God. Even when we don’t feel like worshipping God, the Holy Spirit inspires and provokes our hearts to yearn for the presence of God.

Those times when our spirits yearn for the sublime, it is the Holy Spirit that reveals the deep things of God. The woman of Samaria said to Jesus, “Sir, you have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep…” We cannot fathom the depths of God with our human minds, unless with the help of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor.2:9-12).

The Holy Spirit teaches us how to worship God. He is our Teacher who reveals to our heart the depths in God, which ordinarily we cannot reach (John 14:26). The Holy Spirit gives us the appropriate words with which to worship God.

The Holy Spirit sheds the love of God to our hearts, as we worship Him. Romans 5:5 says, “Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out on our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Authentic worship of God comes out of love.

The Spirit inspires prophecy in our hearts as we worship. Zechariah’s prophesy about Jesus in Luke 1:67-80, was given amidst a time of worship in the temple. We can only speak to one another in Psalms, and hymns by the Holy Spirit (Eph.5: 18, 19).

The Holy Spirit anoints us for worship. Worship is more than music and songs; it is the yielding of our entire lives to God. It is in worship we can fully surrender our entire faculties to God (Romans 12:1 NIV).

David could not have worshipped God the way he did without the Holy Spirit’s anointing. David was not only creative in worship, but introduced innovations in temple worship. His Psalms revealed his love for liturgy in worship. He wrote songs, played the instruments, taught songs, danced and sang unto the Lord. I believe that the dexterity he showed in music was as a result of the anointing of God upon his life. In Psalm 23:5, he alluded to the anointing of God upon his life, when he said, “You anointed my head with oil and my cup runs over.” The writer of Psalm 92 seemed to have David in mind. In verse 10 of this Psalm he stated: “But my horn you have exalted like a wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil.” This, I believe was the secret of David’s ability to worship God. David cherished the Holy Spirit’s presence upon his life so dearly, and this was why he prayed so frantically that God will not take his Spirit from him (Psalm 51:11).

Authentic and an acceptable worship of any form or kind begin with the help and leading of the Holy Spirit.
