The name of the lord is a strong tower (2)

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe,” (Proverbs 18:10 KJV).

A strong tower is a place of refuge, a place of security and safety from the attack of the enemy. In our today’s world, we all need a strong tower as our place of refuge.

David in Psalm 18:1-3, uses metaphors to capture how God is his safety net. “I will love You, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so, shall I be saved from my enemies,” (Psalms 18:1-3 NKJV).

David describes the security he finds in God in these words: my strength, my rock, my fortress, my delivery, my God, my shield, the horn of my salvation and my stronghold. If God is our strong tower, then our relationship with Him must be a solid rock.

In a world embroiled in turmoil, war, and uncertainty, how do we run to God as a place of safety? Here are some Biblical illustrations of what it means:

The people of Nineveh ran to the Lord in repentance when God was about to destroy the city. “But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let everyone turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands. Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish? Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it,” (Jonah 3:8-10 NKJV).

Noah and his family ran into the ark for safety. He obeyed God and built an ark when God warned him about the impending calamity, (Gen.7:16).

Lot, literally dragged his children and their families to escape God’s judgment in Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen.19:13-29). His story is a graphic picture of how we should drag our families to escape God’s judgment.

The action of Jehoshaphat and the children of Judah in 2 Chronicles 20 is a practical example of how to run into God as our stronghold.

In Jericho, Rahab, though a Canaanite, ran to God as her stronghold when she covenanted with the Jewish spies and the God of Israel. The scarlet thread she obediently placed on her window indicates the blood of Jesus. Ruth aligned with the God of the Israelites and chose Him as her stronghold when she identified with Naomi, rather than go back to Moab.

Those who call on the name of the Lord are sure to find safety in God. Romans 10:9 says: “If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Those who confess their sins and believe in Jesus, as Lord and Saviour, find shelter in Him. Jesus would always respond to those who call upon Him, and run to Him, for refuge and shelter. He is a sure a place of safety in times of distress and turbulence (Isaiah 4:5; 25:4; Psalm 27:5).

If others have called upon the name of the Lord and He answered them, your case will not be different when you call upon the Lord.
