“He who walks with the wise becomes wise, but a companion of fools will suffer harm,” Proverbs 13:20
“As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another,” Proverbs 27:17
Never play with the power of closeness. The people you hang out with, the place you go and the environment where you live has about 80 per cent formation on your personality.
Someone called proximity “a game-changer;” and, indeed, it is! Being close to someone, something or someplace can greatly impact lives.
What Is Proximity?
It is defined as the quality or state of being close or near to someone, something or place. Other words for proximity include: nearness, closeness, vicinity, neighbouring, proximate, adjacency. Proximity is powerful, and it is like a two-edged force that shapes success, relationships and perspective. It greatly influences who we become. While proximity fosters intimacy and familiarity, it can also reveals flaws or bring dangers, requiring intention, serving action rather than mere physical presence.
Someone rightly said that if you spend time in a fish market without touching the fish you will begin to smell like fishes, and if you enter a perfume shop and spend a quality time in the perfume shop you eventually begin to smell like the perfumes.
Tony Robbins states: “Who you spend time with is who you become. Proximity is power.” In a wise saying by Jim Rohn Wise: “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” To this reason an anonymous wise saying reads: “Surround yourself with people who push you to be better.”
Few Things Proximity Could Do
• Increases influence: Physical or relational closeness can boost impact or persuasion.
• Fosters connection: Being near people or things can deepen relationships or understanding.
• Shapes habits: Proximity to environments or people can influence behaviours.
• Relationships: Being near someone strengthens bonds (family, friends, partners).
• Personal growth: Proximity to positive/negative influences shapes habits.
• Spiritual growth: Being close to God (through prayer, worship) deepens faith.
• Opportunities: Physical proximity to resources or people could open doors.
• Learning: Being near mentors or info-rich environments boosts growth.
The Dark Side Of Proximity And Some Negative Impacts
• Bad influences: Being around negative people can rub off on you.
• Toxic relationships: Close relationships can turn toxic if not healthy.
• Distractions: Proximity to distractions (like noise, people) can hinder focus.
• Enabling behaviours: Being too close can enable bad habits.
• Stress: Close quarters with stressors amplify anxiety.
Positive Lessons On Proximity: (Being Near To God Or Holiness)
• The Woman with the issue of blood (Mark 5:25-34): This story demonstrates that proximity to Jesus allows his power and healing to pass onto a person. The woman believed that simply touching the hem of his garment—being in extreme proximity—would cure her chronic illness, and her faith resulted in immediate healing.
• The Disciples on the water (Matthew 14:27-33): When the disciples were in the boat with Jesus, their fear subsided because of his presence. Being close to him brought calm, demonstrating that spiritual proximity to Christ can change a situation.
• Ruth’s choice (Ruth 1:16-17): Ruth’s close proximity to her mother-in-law, Naomi, and her commitment to staying with her, allowed her to align herself with God’s people, shifting her from a Moabite outsider to an ancestor in the line of David.
Negative Lessons On Proximity: (Being near to sin or corruption)
• Lot and Sodom (Genesis 13:12-13): A key example is Lot, who pitched his tent toward Sodom. This initial decision of proximity increased until he was “sitting at the gate” of the city, becoming fully immersed in a sinful environment. This shows that moving closer to a corrupt situation eventually influences one’s behaviour.
• The Unclean person (Haggai 2:10-14): In this passage, God teaches through a prophet that while holiness does not automatically spread by touching holy items “uncleanness is contagious.” If someone who is ceremonially unclean touches something, that object becomes defiled. This illustrates that proximity to sin or filth can easily contaminate a person.
The “Bad Company” Principle (1 Corinthians 15:33): While not a narrative story, the proverb, “Bad company corrupts good character” is a direct teaching on this subject, affirming that who you are close to influences who you become.
C.S Lewis said: “If you want to get warm you must stand near the fire: if you want to be wet you must get into the water.”

The Distinction of Proximity
“Be careful who you love, being close to the wrong person can rot the best parts of you,” Unknown
“Proximity can bring you close, but distance can often bring you closer,” Unknown
“Proximity bred familiarity, and familiarity bred comfort,” Unknown
Conclusively, an unknown author said: “Proximity can open your eyes to what is possible, but it is your heart and your service that will open the door to true leadership.”
