WHEN hard times come, we need more than just intelligence, the skills of the technocrats and qualitative managements to sail through. However, we need spiritual depth, the kind we found in the life of Daniel, Joseph, Isaac and Jacob in their different generations. The truth is that the lifting of a nation from the pit of depression is beyond the whims and caprices of the politicians.

Nebuchadnezzar, the king of the then great Babylonian empire, received the greatest shock of his life, when the Chaldeans told him they had no answer to his dream in the book of Daniel 2:5-6, 10-11.  “…The astrologers answered the king, “there is not a man on earth who can do what the king asks! …No one can reveal it to the king except the gods, and they do not live among men.”

It took the spiritual depth of Daniel, the Jewish young man, taken into captivity from the land of Israel, to reveal the king’s dream and also interpret the dream. It was recorded concerning Daniel and his other three Hebrew colleagues that every time the king asked them about something important, they showed much wisdom and understanding. The king found they were 10 times better than all the magicians and wise men in Babylonia kingdom. What all the wise men of king Nebuchadnezzar did not know was revealed to Daniel at night in a vision.

Little wonder the Bible says, “The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law”- Deut 29:29. Aside Daniel, Joseph was another man whose spiritual depth and insight rescued his generation from worst depression ever. With the present advancement in technology and the application of service, crops preservation has been less cumbersome. Despite the modern technology, preservation of crops for 14 years without spoilage remains a huge task. In Joseph’s days, with little or no technology, he was able to preserve crops for 14 years without spoilage. This takes more than what technology can offer. It takes spiritual depth to handle such critical problems.

Interestingly, God used Joseph to preserve the world then. He will also rescue us from any depression today, if we seek His face. Knowing God is what gives life meaning. Seek to know God and He will change your unpleasant situation to pleasant. The author of the book of Hebrews point out that our God has spoken to us in the past through many prophets and other witnesses (Hebrew 1:1-4). If we are attentive, we can still hear God speaks to us today in His word. We can still hear Him speak to us today, if we bring ourselves into doing His will and seek Him with all our hearts. “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart”-Jeremiah 29:13.

The Lord has graciously chosen to make us see why the whole world must depend on Him by allowing situation that is beyond our control to emerge. It is a big mistake to focus on man’s abilities rather than appreciate and acknowledge God’s power.  The people that ever made significant impact on human history are those that were inspired by divine insight. In the meantime, believers all around the world, let’s remember that, God will not leave or forsake us (Hebrew 13:5).

Do not give devil a foothold; the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure and full of gentleness. Seek for God’s wisdom, when you are faced with unpleasant situations, in all areas of your life. He said, “I have come that they may have life to the full”. Why not hand over your life and situations to God, Who has the capacity to change your unpleasant situation to pleasant? If you have not given your life to Jesus, you can’t experience the depth of spiritual insight.
