‘Who do you say I am?’

By Bishop Charles Ighele

At certain point in our lives as parents, husbands or wives, we should learn to ask our children questions. As husbands, we should learn to ask our wives questions about ourselves and as wives, we should learn to ask our husbands questions about ourselves. This is based on the fact that, there is no one human being who is on this planet that is perfect or faultless. There is no human being that is hundred percent in every aspect of his or her life.

Some years ago, my wife, Carol called our children when they were very young and asked them: “what do I do that you don’t like?” Well, the feedbacks she got from them shocked her. They all virtually said collectively that “mummy you shout a lot.” Wow! What an observation. When they told her this, she thanked them and promised them that she won’t shout at them again. Mind you, she did not tell them to ‘shut up’ as some parents will do neither did she see them as being unruly and disrespectful. What they told her was to help her build a better relationship with them.

As parents you should cultivate the habit of asking your children once in a while the things you do that they don’t like. You will be shocked at what they will tell you. This is because you might be oblivious of it just as Carol was oblivious of her shouting. The feedbacks you will get will help you in having a good and smooth relationship between you and your children.

Also, as wives or husbands we should periodically ask our partners questions that will make our union or relationship better and smoother. Questions like, honey what are some of the things I do that you do not like? What are some of the things I say that you do not like? What are the dresses I wear that you do not like? These are some salient questions that are capable of making our relationships healthier.

In addition, as a boss or employee meet with your employees or colleagues respectively to ask them some of the things you do that do not augur well with them? This was what Jesus did. He wanted to know the opinion people had about him. If Jesus could do this then you can also do it. Love you!
