Will you also go away?
It is very disturbing that many Christians nowadays are no longer standing bold enough to profess their faith for fear of persecution, intimidation or being disenfranchised in some quarters. While prostitutes, gays, etc are boldly walking freely on the streets and advertising themselves, many who claim to be Christians are shying away from declaring their faith.
This lukewarm attitude is a serious concern to Christendom because genuine believers are expected to be dead to persecution and intimidation. They are expected to do everything to make Jesus the King of kings and Lord of lords. They are also expected to stand out for the world to see them.
Mt 5:16 says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father, which is in heaven.”
You that profess Christianity, the Master advises that you should let your holy life, and pure conversation to be seen everywhere and in all that you do either in business, at home and abroad, let it be seen that you are a real Christian.
This is the time we should let the world know where we belong and who our Master is. The dark world needs light now than ever before. You cannot afford to be dormant, let your light shine among men. As the soul is to the body, so also believers are to the world. The soul dwells in the body, but is not of the body, so also we dwell in the world, though we are not of the world.
No matter the hardship, persecution and oppression being experienced now, we must not be daunted in discharging our duty of evangelising the world. If others chicken out, we should not abandon the calling, which brings meaning to our existence.
John 6:66-68 states, “From that time many of His disciples went back, and walked no more with Him. 67 Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? 68 Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? Thou hast the words of eternal life.”
In the time of Christ, some of the disciples turned away from Him and left because they became His followers by the prospect of some temporal benefit and when that temporal benefit was not obtained, they turned away. Some people are like that in the present dispensation; they are offended by the persecution of the world and thus take offence and turn back. But the only sure way to victory is to persevere till the end.
If we are really born again, then when others are turning back we should be pressing and contending seriously for the mark of perfection. When others are seeing giants and persecution we should be seeing heaven at last.
We cannot afford to turn away under any excuse. If we turn away from Christ, to whom shall we go to? When the devil came persuading us to go away, we should remember the Lord’s question: ‘Will ye also go away?’ If we go away, to whom shall we go? Christ is the fountain of life and He alone grants salvation. And this should comfort and give us joy that bids fear and despondency bye.
Will ye also go away? This question is for you, who are believers. Christ is asking, in view of the persecution and oppression going on in the world today against believers, will you abandon Him? You, who He has distinguished with innumerable marks of His affection, who He has chosen out of the world to be His companions, who He has revealed the secrets of the eternal world and who He has promised to seat with Him on the throne in glory; will You go away?
