Wisdom: What Is It? (3)

Text: James 3:13: Proverbs 1:7 Key verse: Proverbs 16:16: “How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver,” (NKJV).

Wisdom is the proper use of knowledge. We have so much knowledge, but wisdom is the proper application of that knowledge. If we have knowledge and don’t know how to apply it to our lives; it is of no use. It is not useful to know something and not knowing how to use it. The Book of Proverbs is the book of wisdom and if you apply what it teaches to your life, you will have a successful living here on earth and beyond. Wisdom is a depth of insight that takes us beyond the ways things look to the way they really are. It goes beyond how we feel to do what we know is right. It is wisdom to know that we should live beyond the way we feel. The absence of emotion opens our eyes and makes us to see things differently. Feelings are real, but we don’t allow them to control us. How we feel may make us to desire to have everything that we want. God didn’t call us to have everything that we want in life; He called us to do His will. Wisdom always does now what we will be happy with later on. Later on will always come because we will reap what we always sow.

Wisdom helps us to know who we are as children of God because it puts our emotions and actions on guard so that we don’t act in certain ways that negatively reflect on God. If you are a child of God, then, beware of your surrounding and the way you live your life. It is also wisdom to know that you should do what you do well. The teachings of Ecclesiastes 9:10, encourages diligence and excellence in all tasks because there will be no opportunity for work, planning, or wisdom after death. This perspective promotes a proactive and diligent approach to life, suggesting that the wisdom of how to live is reflected in how one performs the activities of life. It is wisdom if you know how to work well with people and do good administration.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 highlights the benefits of teamwork and mutual support, emphasising that two are better than one because they can help each other. Philippians 2:3-4 encourages humility and valuing others above oneself, while 1 Corinthians 1:10 calls for unity and agreement. Everything rises and falls on leadership. When leadership gets better, things get better.

Wisdom is treading the path that is tested, tried and has worked, while it is good to listen to experienced people. Sir Richard Branson was quoted as saying: “Great leaders are great listeners.” It is wisdom to listen to people who have been where you are going. Don’t just go with people, but with people who have been where you are going. Proverbs 19:20 says: “Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future. When you seek guidance from experienced people, you gain knowledge and avoid mistakes.

If you want to go far in life, consult experienced people because they have been through what you are dealing with and they worked it out. Don’t consult bitter people because they will give you emotional advice. It is wisdom to do whatever you have to do from a place of desire to please God. The fear of God, not the dread of God is the beginning of wisdom. Fear is reverence and honour for God and His word.
