Jesus: Our high priest, Prophet and King – Part 3

Jesus is our King! His kingship and rulership are universal; he is the King of the whole world. The book of Revelations says this about Jesus, “And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: King of kings and Lord of lords,” (Revelation 19:16 NKJV). This describes his sovereign rule and reign. The name is said to be written on his robe, which is an allusion to the custom of persons of eminence having their names interwoven in their garments, and which was sometimes done in letters of gold. Even in contemporary times, some inscribe their names on their valuables.

The title of Jesus as the King of kings and Lord of lords means that there is no higher authority than he is. His reign over all things is absolute. God raised Him from the dead and placed Him over all things, “far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in the one to come. And he puts all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all,” (Ephesians 1:21-23).

David understood that the God-son will become the King over the earth and all of its inhabitants. In Psalm 2:6-8, he writes: “Yet, I have set My king on My holy hill of Zion.’ ‘I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, “you are My son, today I have begotten You. Ask of Me and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession.”

Other Psalmists followed the steps of David in declaring the Kingship of Jesus:

“The Lord is King forever and ever; the nations have perished out of His land.” (Psalm 10:16)

“All the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations shall worship before You. For the kingdom is the Lord’s, and He rules over the nations.” (Psalm 22:27-28)

“The Lord sat enthroned at the flood. And the Lord sits as King forever.” (Psalm 29:10)

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your Kingdom.” (Psalm 45:6).

“Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and Your dominion endures throughout all generations.” (Psalm 143:13).

Prophet Zechariah in Chapter 9:9 equally prophesied about the kingship of Jesus thus: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, lowly and riding on a donkey, a colt, the foal of a donkey.”

When He was crucified, the inscription over His head read that He was “King of the Jews.” Yet, when asked by Pilate if He was a King (John 18:33), Jesus replied, “My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here,” (verse 36).

What is the personal benefit of the kingship of Jesus to you? First, you must acknowledge him as your King and Lord of your life.

Secondly, recognise that Jesus is coming back to planet earth to reign as King of kings and Lord of Lords. Thirdly, serve the King with your talents and skills to be rewarded on his return. Lastly, worship him daily as the King of kings.
