The first outing of Couples Initiative of the Lagos District Assembly of God held last week. The welcome address was delivered by the Chairperson, Evang (Mrs) Helen C. Okafor, on behalf of the Initiative.

The Lagos District Superintendent, the Lagos District Presbyters, Sectional Leaders, Departmental Heads, Ministers of God, Beloved Brothers and Sisters in the Lord, Our Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen.

On behalf of the Couples Initiative, I welcome you all to this epoch making event that has brought together husbands and wives for a better marriage relationship. Today is one of my happiest days because it is like a dream come true. I thank God Almighty who made this day a reality.

This unique gathering was borne out of the desire for a good relationship, better understanding among spouses and good upbringing of our children. It has always been a concern to me whenever I hear of some spouses complaining on what they are suffering in the hand of their partners. Whenever I heard of AG members threatening to divorce or have already divorced, I have always felt bad. When some spouses come to me with their bitter stories of their marriage, and when asked “why didn’t you seek for counsel early until now that it has come to this bad stage?” The response would be “because I don’t know who to talk to on the matter.”

A day came in the year 2014 when the thought of those ones in dire need of good relationship between them and their spouses overwhelmed my soul. I had no option than to seek for a way of assisting them out of this situation. And knowing that there are some Nigerian men, whom if they hear that a woman is organising a thing of this nature, will outrightly dismiss it, saying that it is a woman’s thing, just as some people have even showcased, during the creation of awareness of the programme. This led me to reach out to the Coordinator of Men’s Ministries, who obliged to join me and ensure that this problem is given serious attention. This is how the journey to this couples initiative began. I thank God that the D-day has come for God to turn things around for good in our homes and marriages in Jesus name.

I want to also appreciate all of us that have responded to this all-important call that is meant for the good of all and sundry and most especially that of our marriages and homes. Therefore, I urge you to pay attention to every word, speech, ministration, advise, question and answer today because I am sure that God would through this medium fine-tune our marriages, homes and spouses, no doubt this would re-energise us for greater love for each other. I pray that after this time out that there will be no more thought of divorce or separation among us or around us in the name of Jesus Christ.

May the Lord give us listening ears, understanding and the willingness to make a change for good of our homes and family relationship. May the Lord God Almighty richly bless us in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.
