Jayeola advocates issue-based campaigns ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections

INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan

As political discussions surrounding Nigeria’s 2027 general elections continue to gain momentum, Senior Journalist and Editor at West Trybe Media News, Jayeola Olalekan Azeez, has called on political leaders, parties, and citizens to prioritise issue-based campaigns capable of advancing national development rather than deepening political divisions.

In an opinion editorial published by West Trybe Media News, Jayeola described the 2027 elections as another critical milestone in Nigeria’s democratic journey, stressing that the country has reached a point where voters are more interested in practical solutions to pressing national challenges than in empty political promises or personal attacks.

According to him, Nigerians are increasingly seeking leaders with clear and realistic plans to address the country’s economic difficulties, insecurity, unemployment, poor educational standards, healthcare challenges, and inadequate infrastructure. He argued that political campaigns should therefore focus on presenting measurable policies and programmes capable of improving the welfare of citizens.

“The strength of any democracy is measured not only by the outcome of elections but by the quality of conversations leading to them,” Jayeola wrote. “Nigerians deserve campaigns built on ideas, competence, accountability, and measurable solutions.”

He maintained that while political competition remains a healthy feature of democratic governance, it should never overshadow the need for constructive engagement on issues that directly affect the lives of Nigerians. According to him, elections should provide opportunities for candidates to explain their vision for national development instead of relying on inflammatory rhetoric or divisive narratives.

Jayeola also expressed concern over the growing influence of digital media as political activities intensify. While acknowledging the opportunities offered by online platforms for civic engagement and political participation, he warned against the increasing spread of misinformation, fake news, and unverified political content capable of misleading voters and undermining public confidence in the electoral process.

He therefore urged journalists, content creators, bloggers, and media organisations to uphold the highest standards of professionalism by ensuring accuracy, fairness, balance, and responsible reporting throughout the election period. According to him, the media has a crucial responsibility to provide citizens with verified information that promotes informed democratic participation.

The editorial further encouraged young Nigerians to play active roles in shaping the country’s democratic future through voter registration, civic education, peaceful political participation, and informed decision-making. Jayeola emphasised that democracy thrives when citizens remain actively engaged before, during, and after elections rather than limiting their participation to casting votes alone.

He also stressed that the responsibility for building a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria does not rest solely on elected leaders. Political parties, civil society organisations, the media, religious and traditional institutions, and the electorate all have important roles to play in promoting transparency, accountability, and national unity.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually gather pace, Jayeola reaffirmed West Trybe Media News’ commitment to providing factual, balanced, and independent political reporting that empowers Nigerians to make informed electoral choices.

Rather than predicting election winners or endorsing political interests, he concluded that the true measure of success for the 2027 elections will depend on the credibility of the electoral process, the maturity of political discourse, and the collective commitment of Nigerians to strengthening democracy and sustaining good governance.
