Text: 2 Kings 6:25-33; 7:1-2, 16
The children of Israel at this period of their lives’ journey were going through series of challenges. The level of poverty that greeted the land was so severe and excruciating that people resorted to killing their children for food. The bond that held sway between children and parents did not matter at this time, as satisfying the crushing hunger became priority. At this critical period, Elijah was needed to manifest his prophetic calling in solving the ravaging problem in the land.

Similarly, our country needs prophetic intervention to solve the multifaceted challenges facing the land. Nigeria is by no means different from the Israelites’ condition. Today, parents sell their children for meagre sum because of hunger. However, taking negative and sinful measures to solve any need worsens the situation. At a time like this, what is needed is prophetic intervention. When at the crossroad of difficulties, prophetic intervention is the answer. At the time of severe hunger and financial stress, prophetic intervention takes care of it.

Elijah manifested his prophetic ministry, when he encountered the Zeraphath woman and the widow, whose husband was until his death, a prophet. In the two occasions, the women manifested an uncommon faith that attracted prophetic intervention to their lives. In the former, the only food the woman had to eat with her child and die was what she gave to Elijah. This singular act of faith moved God to action through Elijah. Miracle of divine provision showed forth in response to Zeraphath woman’s benevolence towards Elijah. Undoubtedly, everyone needs a true prophet called by God to take him to his desired destination.

When an axe borrowed by the sons of the prophet fell inside the river, Elijah was called upon to intervene. This encounter brought solution to the prophet’s sons. Before Elijah’s intervention, the prophet’s sons had no solution on how they could bring the axe out from the river. This clearly shows that the ministry of a prophet is required in every generation to respond to situations that is beyond human knowledge. Many people go through life journey without success, because they do not recognise the importance of prophetic intervention.

Prophetic intervention requires man’s cooperation in the area of faith. Obviously, without faith, prophetic intervention will be frustrated. To ensure results, there must be unshakable belief in the words of a prophet through God. Unbelief frustrates prophetic intervention. This happened in the scripture, when the Lord on whose hand the king lean, doubted the prophetic pronouncement of Elijah. He was stampeded to death; he never lived to witness God’s divine provision.

Today, “…Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper (2 Chronicle 20:20).
