Family launches Foundation To Perpetuate His Legacy

As part of activities to commemorate the one-year remembrance of the first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, the family has unveiled the Lateef Kayode Jakande (LKJ) Foundation to continue his charitable acts.

Jakande died in 2021, at the age of 91.

Speaking at a special prayer session organised by the family, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, said that the deceased’s indelible legacies must never be forgotten, as his monumental development strides made so many influential people in the state.

Sanwo-Olu, a patron of the foundation said that only God knows where he would have ended up without Jakande’s educational programmes targeted at the poor, building new neighbourhood primary and secondary schools, and free primary and secondary education.

Senator Tinubu, who represents Lagos Central while eulogising Jakande described him as “a great father and mentor; a man that worked tirelessly and effortlessly to achieve his legacies in the country. I pray that his children will be able to toe his path and imbibe their father’s legacy,” she said.

A former member of the House of Representatives and son of the late former governor, Deji Jakande, who thanked the attendees, however, informed that the foundation has been in existence before their father’s demise.

According to him, the foundation has so far helped the needy, orphans, widows, physically challenged and people with health challenges.

The Vice-Chairman, Odi Olowo LCDA, Seyi Jakande, stressed that his father’s legacies would continue, as his inedible footprints must not be forgotten.

“We believe that remembering him today, his legacy must continue and we will ensure the continuity of this foundation.”

On his part, Imam Hakeem Kosoko, who said that Jakande did a lot for the country, prayed that Allah would reward him abundantly.

“When Baba was alive, he had a foundation named Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande Help Foundation. Baba did not like to call people to contribute to the foundation. All the charity he did was from the little he earned. He assisted the needy, widows and the poor, but today he is no more. So, the children have decided to continue with the foundation, and use it in helping those that are in need.”

The special prayer was graced by eminent personalities, including senators Oluremi Tinubu, Musiliu Obanikoro, and Ganiu Solomon; Alhaji Tanko Yakasai; Iyalode of Lagos, Alhaja Bintu Tinubu; Sheik Muyideen Bello; Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Sulaimon Abou-Nolla; wife of former governor of the state, Dame Emmanuela Fashola, and former Governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba among others.
