The veil is broken

Anene Nwachukwu

In Exodus 26: 30-35, God gave Moses specific instruction regarding the veil. “You shall make a veil woven of blue, purple and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen, it shall be woven with an artistic design of cherubim. It shall hang upon the four pillars of acacia wood overlaid with gold. Their hooks shall be gold, upon four sockets of silver. And you shall hang the veil from the clasps.”

We understand from this that the veil is made tough and beautiful. Unlike today’s veil or curtain, it is built to last and does not tear easily like lace curtain or wedding veils. So, when we think of veils in this context, it’s important we understand it and not mix it up with today’s images of veil.

“Now you shall bring the ark of the testimony in there, behind the veil. The veil shall be divided for you between the Holy place and most Holy.”From here, we understand that the veil separates the most Holy place from the Holy place. It serves as a door to the place where God is, in the temple. And the high priests were the only ones allowed to enter there, and it’s only once a year to offer blood for the people’s sin. Hebrews 9:7.

In Matthew 27:50-51 says, ‘And Jesus cried out with a loud voice and yielded up His spirit. And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

The tearing of the veil symbolises that there is no longer a need for a Jewish high priest to stand before the Lord and make atonement for our sins. Jesus has provided for our atonement through His death on the cross. Hebrews 4: 14-16 says since then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathise with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

Let us then with confidence draw near to the Throne of Grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” We can now come boldly and directly to God through Jesus Christ to receive mercy and grace. Jesus Christ now serves as our high priest. God has torn down the barrier between Himself and us through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
