Victory through holiness – Part 5

Text: 1 Samuel 2:12-36; 1 Samuel 3:11-18

Key Verse: 1 Samuel 4:11, “And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni, and Phinehas, were slain.” (KJV)

There may be a need to shout the name of Jesus all the time. There may be a need to shout “Praise the Lord” all the time and there may be a need to shout “Alleluia and Amen” all the time, but all these things will amount to nothing in the absence of holiness.

There was war between Israel and the Philistines and there is always going to be the war to fight in our Christian journey (1 Samuel 4). The Bible said 4,000-strong Israel army was killed in the war and when they came back, the elders of Israel asked why were they killed. That was a good question, and just like the question, the disciples of Jesus asked Jesus saying, “Why couldn’t we cast out that demon?” (Matthew 17:19). One of the Elders of Israel raised up his hand and said we need to bring the ark of God from Shiloh into the house, and when the ark of God is with us, victory is ours. But guess what, it was Hophni and Phinehas that brought the ark into Israel’s camp. When they brought the ark, there was a shout of Alleluia everywhere.

Alleluia will only mean something, when it is coming from the mouth of the person it should come from. When the Philistines heard the alleluia shout going on in Israel’s camp, they became afraid because they said that the God of Israel had come into their camp. But someone said among the Philistines fear not, let’s go and fight them and we shall defeat them. This time, the Philistines killed 30,000-strong Israel army, and the ark of God, where they put their trust in was carried away. Hophni and Phinehas, two wicked priests who had been rejected by God, but whose father left on the priestly seat, were killed in fulfillment of the prophecy according to Samuel (1 Samuel 2:34).

We have personal battles to fight. We have family battles to fight and we have group battles to fight. Even where you are doing your business, you have battles to fight. Sometimes, where you live, you have battles to fight. Sometimes among your kindred, you have battles to fight. In your school, you have battles to fight and in your spiritual life, you have battles to fight. If for any reason you disregard God; if for any reason, you disrespect God; if for any reason, you begin to go your own way and you don’t care about God’s way; if for any reason you begin to honour men and women more than God and if for any reason you become deaf to what God is saying, no matter who tells you anything to the contrary, you will not see victory.

Let’s not join other nations that are making a noise like Israel. You cannot make noise outside the platform of holiness and uprightness. There are all types of noise in the world today. There is a noise that makes sense unto the Lord, the real Pentecostal noise and there is a noise that is irritation unto God. It irritates God because He is not in that noise.

You will only see victory when you live for God; when you give yourself to God; when you crown Jesus Lord and Master of your life and when you are totally surrendered to the Lord. When you love righteousness and hate iniquity, God will lift you above your contemporaries by anointing you with the oil of gladness (Hebrews 1:9).

Today’s Nugget: There is the real Pentecostal noise.
Prayer: Lord, help me to walk in holiness and in victory.
