Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has been elected Vice Chair of the 2025 Council of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), marking the country’s first appointment to a leadership position on the Council in nearly five decades.
The announcement was made following a Council session that brought together representatives of ITU member states.
The Council, which consists of 48 elected members, serves as the governing body of the ITU between plenipotentiary conferences and plays a key role in setting direction for global digital policy and telecommunications development.
Reacting to the development, Dr. Tijani described the election as a significant responsibility. He acknowledged the support of ITU leadership and member countries and said he looked forward to working with the Council Chair, Ms. Cristiana Flutur, and other members to advance collective digital goals.
Tijani stated that his new role reflects Nigeria’s ongoing priorities in digital infrastructure and inclusion, which are also embedded in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to him, Nigeria intends to use the position to advocate for stronger global cooperation on areas such as digital access, cybersecurity, public infrastructure, and capacity building.
He added that the role would also provide an avenue to amplify Nigeria’s contributions to global digital policy while reinforcing domestic efforts, including expanding internet connectivity in rural areas and enhancing digital literacy among young Nigerians.
The ITU, a specialised agency of the United Nations, oversees issues related to information and communication technologies worldwide.
Tijani’s election comes at a time when countries are increasingly focused on collaborative approaches to managing digital transformation and ensuring inclusive access to technological advancement.
